Learning about Plants, Herbal Medicine & Making Art
~Weekly Summer Classes, small groups, ages 7-11 ~

Students will learn Herbal Medicine, Plant and Tree I.D., and other fascinating things about nature. We will also be in the Art Studio/Kitchen doing Paper Making, Relief and Mono-Printing, Book Making, & Sculpture. *Class meets in Prospect Park on Monday and Wednesday, and at the BSEC building across from the park on Tuesday & Thursday. Each week we will learn about new plants, trees, butterflies, insects, paper and book making techniques and more.

Make Herbal Medicine - Learn how to identify medicinal plants and make herbal preparations including oils, lotions, salves, and syrups. Identify, harvest and prepare a real product including label making.

Artists Books - Learn to make books as artistic expressions, collections, and recordings of things we will learn. We will learn real book binding techniques and creative assemblies. Drawings, prints, pressings, maps and more provide a variety of pages to put in your book, learn to bind books and even !

Paper Making - We will make paper out of recycled and found materials. Inclusions of scented herbs, flowers, barks, make this an especially exciting activity. Natural dyes and other media are also in the studio for our use. Students staying for multiple weeks work on paper sculptures.

Print Making - In addition to Book and Paper Making, students learn Relief and Monoprinting processes to paint, carve, draw and record what we learn about. We will use a printing press at the Open Source Gallery classroom to make book pages and/or wall hanging artwork.

Classes meet alternately at the BSEC building just across from Park, at Prospect Park West & 3rd St. Each weekly class is $275 per week.
